About

Two snake games, one browser tab.

danksnake.com is two free games built on the oldest idea in the genre: a snake that grows. Both games run in your browser. There is nothing to install, no account to make and nothing to buy.

The two games

The arcade, at danksnake.com, is the fast one. Your body is the weapon: close a loop of it around enemies and everything inside is crushed, at the cost of the loop's own length. Arenas have goals, every few kills or bites of food you pick a mutation that bends the rules, and a run lasts minutes. How to play has the full rules and the score table. It draws with WebGL (the PixiJS library, served from this site), and its sound effects and synthwave music are generated in your browser as you play rather than downloaded.

The daily puzzle, at /daily/, is the slow one and the original danksnake: one 19 by 19 board a day, the same for everyone, where every cell you enter stays part of you, so the only question is how much of the board you can eat before you wall yourself in. Nothing is timed, and every past board is still playable.

What the arcade keeps

Only your settings (reduced motion, sound, volume, music) and two flags that remember you have already seen the steering hint and the coil hint, in your browser's local storage on this device. The arcade sends nothing about your runs anywhere: your score is shown on the death screen and is not saved.

What the daily puzzle keeps

On your device: a random 24-character token, your best result per board, the run in progress (so a reload resumes it), and any finished run that could not be sent yet. The token is not an account. It is never shown or asked for, and clearing your browser's storage simply starts a new one; you lose your streak and nothing else.

On the score server, when a run ends: the token, the board's date and the run's list of moves, which the server replays with the same rules code to check the score before it counts. From that it keeps your best per board, your streak, the day's results for the leaderboard, and any challenge links you make. Your on-screen name is generated from the token, so no text you type ever reaches the server. Your IP address is used by the score server only in memory, to limit how many runs one address can send in an hour; it does not write it into those records. A day's results are swept from the server 400 days later.

Page views

Every page on the site counts visits with GoatCounter, a cookie-free page-view counter, on a server run for this site (stats.dankdev.com). It records the page, the site that linked to it, the browser and screen size and a country, without cookies and without building a profile of you. Like any website, the web server sees your IP address when it sends a page.

Who makes it

danksnake is part of DANKGAMES, a small label of browser games that are the same shape as this one: a tab, no install, no account.
